What is BICS?
The British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme is a government levy exemption for UK manufacturers. If your site qualifies, three costs come off your electricity bill: the Renewables Obligation, the Feed-in Tariff, and the Capacity Market levy. Most businesses have never seen these three named on a bill, let alone removed from one.
Who qualifies?
Four things all have to be true:
1. Your business is registered at Companies House
2. You operate in an eligible manufacturing sector, by SIC code
3. You manufacture eligible products in Great Britain, by commodity (HS) code
4. Your site draws more than 33 MWh of grid-supplied electricity a year
Only grid-supplied power counts towards the 33 MWh. Anything you generate on site sits outside the threshold, and outside the relief.
What if my site makes eligible and ineligible products?
Mixed sites get a sliding scale rather than a straight yes or no, based on the share of the site’s electricity used for eligible manufacturing:
Working out that percentage is the main piece of homework. Do it early: you’ll need to explain your method in writing as part of the application.
When do I apply, and when does the money arrive?
Applications run 1 October to 30 November 2026, a two-month window. Government confirms eligibility in January 2027 and notifies your supplier directly, so there’s nothing to chase. Relief on the RO and FiT starts on invoices from April 2027, with Capacity Market relief following in October 2027. Get approved in this first round and you also receive a one-off payment during 2027, backdated to April 2026.
Does signing a fixed contract now cost me BICS?
No. If your site is confirmed eligible, the relief applies on the scheme’s own timeline, on top of whatever contract you’re on. Signing today closes no doors.
Can tem apply on my behalf?
You submit the application yourself, because the declarations have to sit with your business. If you’d rather your energy partner handled it, they can apply for you once you’ve formally authorised them.
