Meet the award-winning biogas project changing the game in Tuscany
One hundred thousand tonnes of CO₂ saved, 15% more recycling, and zero landfill reliance. This is what modern biogas looks like.

One hundred thousand tonnes of CO₂ saved, 15% more recycling, and zero landfill reliance. This is what modern biogas looks like.
In the hills of southern Tuscany, something special is happening with waste. No, really. What used to be food scraps and landfill-bound leftovers is now bio-methane, clean CO₂, and compost so rich that the local vineyards are on track for the top shelf.
We’re talking about Le Cortine, a newly revamped composting and anaerobic digestion plant in Asciano, operated by Entsorga Italia Spa, and winner of the Best Biogas Plant Above 1MWe-equivalent at July’s World Biogas Expo. (Sidenote: an award we were proud to support.)
This is what a circular economy looks like.
A €40 million overhaul that’s delivering more than ROI
The Le Cortine project isn’t just another box-ticking “green upgrade.” It’s a fully transformed, multi-output powerhouse that:
Converts food waste into clean, renewable biomethane
Captures food-grade CO₂ for industrial reuse
Produces high-quality compost that supports regional agriculture
Cuts 100,000+ tonnes of CO₂e emissions a year. That’s the same as a 40-hectare forest
In layman’s terms, Le Cortine is meaningfully ahead of the game as a leading example of renewable power in action.
Entsorga, along with project partners Secit Impianti and Tecnostrade, built this system to be one of the most advanced of its kind in Italy. It’s increased recycling rates by 15%, dramatically reduced landfill reliance, and set a benchmark for how waste infrastructure should work in 2025.
And frankly, it’s that kind of cleverness that caught our eye.
This plant is making big changes, and we’re here for it.
Entsorga is known for its impressive technology, its deep expertise in waste re-use, and its belief that today’s waste can, and should, become tomorrow’s resource. And at tem, we share that view.
We believe systems matter. Infrastructure matters. Because if we’re going to fix what’s broken in the energy market, it’s not going to happen through patches. It’s going to happen through partnerships. Through smarter design, cleaner inputs, and fairer distribution.
So when we see a plant like Le Cortine not only hitting sustainability goals, but reshaping what’s possible in the sector? We pay attention.
A plant that sets the bar
Le Cortine is a working demonstration of how circular infrastructure can be scaled with care and impact. A rare example of a project that delivers across environmental, technical, and regional goals all at once.
At tem, we believe these kinds of projects deserve more than recognition, but we’re glad to shine the spotlight where it’s well deserved. Entsorga’s work reminds us what’s possible when innovation meets purpose.
If you’re a renewable generator doing great work, either big or small, we’d love to hear from you. Our generator community is growing fast, and we’re always looking to connect more producers to businesses that value transparency and fair pricing.
