"Because we're a family business, dealing with people is important to us. Knowing who we're dealing with and having good communications. We've dealt with other people before, but it's far more faceless."

What changes when you know who buys your electricity

Names, not a queue

Before tem, the farm dealt with a supplier where it knew none of the individuals involved. Now the team knows who it is talking to. For a family that values long-term relationships with the businesses it works with, knowing names and faces matters.

A fixed price to plan around

With a fixed price agreed ahead, the farm can forecast its income and budget with confidence. Managing Director Mark Wells and Finance Director Simon Scott used that to plan the replacement of the main engine, an investment of nearly £1 million.

The same long view

For a farm, a reservoir is a 20 to 40 year project and a tree is a 100 year one. The Gittus family makes decisions on that horizon, and wants partners who do the same. Long-term relationships were part of why Symonds Farm moved to tem.

For a family that has farmed in West Suffolk for over 150 years, a business relationship comes down to people. Symonds Farm knows who it is dealing with, and can plan a replacement engine worth nearly £1 million on a price it knows in advance. In September the family opened the farm to tem and other anaerobic digestion operators, with a tour of a plant generating since 2012 and a home-cooked lunch.
