What is P442?

P442 (Exempt Supply) is the Ofgem-approved regulatory scheme that connects eligible renewable generation to one or more businesses’ energy usage.

When we pair the volume you generate with the energy consumption of a business, you are considered an “exempt supplier” to that business, without the requirement of holding a full electricity supply license. This reduces certain Non-Commodity Costs (NCCs) for businesses and means more value flows back to you.

What do I need to know about eligibility?

P442 is open to all renewable technologies: solar, wind, hydro, AD, landfill gas.

While you're earning ROCs, you can't supply under P442 at the same time. When your accreditation ends, you’re eligible for P442.

P442 supply is capped at 2.5 MW to non-domestic customers and 5 MW overall, in any half-hourly settlement period. This applies across your whole corporate group, not just one site. Staying within the cap is a legal requirement for generators.

How does P442 work with tem?

tem handles the application, billing, metering and settlement for you, so you don't need to do extra work in order to benefit.

You'll receive your P442 earnings monthly, alongside your generation invoice. These will appear as your RED Plus Benefit. Depending on your output, you might be paired to a single business or to several. In many cases, we link multiple businesses to one generator so we can allocate the full eligible volume and maximise your benefit.

If a business in your pool drops out, can allocate a replacement buyer to your generation, so losing a buyer doesn't mean losing your benefit. We'll let you know if anything changes in your pool of businesses.

Seasonal dips and planned downtime are normal. Let your account manager know if you're expecting a significant change in output, so we plan around it.

Not every P442 route pays the same.

P442 made exempt supply operational at scale for the first time. That gives your generation a real route to revenue that reflects its value, not just its wholesale price.

But the mechanism doesn't decide who keeps that value. The commercial structure on top of it does. In some setups, a licensed supplier sits between you and the business, passes the exemption benefit to the business, and offers you wholesale plus a small premium. You generated the value. You don't always see where the rest of it went.

With tem, you see it: what businesse are linked to your generation, what's exempt, and what reaches you as a result.
