tem. was founded based on CEO Joe McDonald’s 10-year obsession with improving efficiency in energy markets and one night playing the popular board game dungeons and dragons.

'When I started in energy I was always asking “why”. I simply had no idea how energy worked. It was a mystery to me. The more I learnt, the more I became obsessed with how inefficient current energy transactions were and how the complexity was an excuse, not a blocker to change.

After building and selling a successful energy trading company I knew exactly where the frustrations were, and wanted to eradicate them completely. Taking inspiration from the amazing impact that technology has had in financial markets over the last 10 years, I could feel that now was the time for real change in the way energy markets work.'
However, it was whilst playing a dungeons and dragons campaign that the real light bulb moment (excuse the pun) came for Joe.

'The game master created a fantasy world scenario where water, food and energy were not commodities but basic human rights that we made available to all. At first, I thought it was ridiculous (yes despite the orcs and goblins, it was this that was the least believable part for me!).

Up until this point, I strongly believed that energy is simply a commodity to be traded, it's supply vs demand with winners and losers, fairness and abundance doesn’t lead to innovation...however, a seed was planted that evening. The more I thought about it, the more it seemed that the real energy world was rigged, producing the same winners and losers every time.

This has been unchanged for 50 years but now, for the first time, we have a real opportunity to take advantage of a new source of renewable power that is being built across the globe. A source of power that finally has the ability to decouple itself from the trends, practices and centralised ownership structures of fossil fuel commodities like oil and gas. Our game master put it best - “no one can own the wind”.'

The next day Joe contacted future co-founders Jason, Ross and Bartek, and invited them over to chat. ‘Covering Product, Technology, Data-science and Commercial we had all previously worked together building our last energy company and it was clear from the moment we started talking that we were all aligned on the scale of the problem, the need for disruption and that we had the right complimentary skill sets to be the ones to tackle it!. As we all debated how to launch a new reimagined energy transaction method, it was seeing both the mixture of fear and excitement that made me believe we could be about to build a game-changer!’
